Death row inmate escapes in Texas

A manhunt is under way in Texas after a death row inmate walked out of a Houston jail in civilian clothes and with a fake badge.

Charles Victor Thompson, 35, apparently changed out of his usual orange overalls in a room used for discussions between inmates and lawyers.

Thompson was convicted of murder after shooting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend dead in 1998.

However he was sentenced to death only last Friday.

"He still has not been found," said Lieutenant John Martin, sheriff of Harris County, about seven hours after the escape from Baker Street jail.

Thompson was being held in a high-security unit, although the prison was a county jail, as Thompson had still not been moved to a higher-category jail.

Authorities described him as 5ft 11in (180cm) and weighing about 16st (104kg), and say he was wearing a dark blue shirt, khaki trousers and white sports shoes.

"He managed to get some civilian clothing. He had changed out of the orange jumpsuit that inmates ordinarily wear," Lt Martin told the Houston Chronicle.

"We don't know exactly where he got that from."

Authorities said they were searching central Houston and the surrounding area, concentrating on likely escape routes.

'Pre-planned'

An investigation was under way into how he got the clothes and a law enforcement identity card.

"It definitely suggests that this was pre-planned and strongly suggests he had help in making his escape," Lt Martin said.

The sheriff told the Chronicle that about 3,300 prisoners were held in the Baker Street jail.

Thompson's escape was the first since the facility was built about three years ago, he said.

The relatives of Thompson's victims, Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, were shocked at the news.

"This is something that's just unfathomable to me," said Ms Hayslip's brother, Mike Donaghy, 45.

"How can a convicted murderer get away like that? How did he get in civilian clothes? How did he get a badge?"

Thompson was being held in a high-security unit

I'd hate to see how many escape from a Low-security unit. Some security they've got there.

Well, this sure is bad news. What now? I guess we just wait until he whacks someone else so we (and by we, I mean someone else) can just find again...I guess. <.<? >.>?

A fake badge? Was he wearing one of those clown masks or those things with a fake moustache and glasses? Didn't they realise he wasn't wearing a fake face?

If someone is on Death Row, sure to God, you're gonna remember what they look like. The fact he stands out at about 3 stone overweight for someone his height would kinda be a pointer (no offence to overweight people, but it's kinda obvious I guess).

Ah well...next time we trust the Americans to hold Terrorists in a "HIGH" Security Prison, I'm flying to the moon.

I know dude. What I mean is, next time they send anyone as DANGEROUS as a terrorist to a so-called High security prison over there, I'd be flying to the moon.

He killed TWO people and was sent to death row...? What the feck.... Must be something more to it than that.

Surely they were two people who were somewhat important (I doubt that though) or something, cause people have got much less for worse.

I mean fair enough, he's killed people. He's killed TWO people and he's on deathrow. I'm telling you, people have killed three or four people and have been sentenced to life but not deathrow.

American law is just bizarre.

Well, this is Texas, and they are quick to hand out the death penalty. You kill somone there, you die, simple as that xD. They also allow gunracks in trucks and concealed weapons... Maybe moving there won't be so bad after all...

You have to take a ten hour class to carry a concealed weapon though. Lol, Texas isn't that bad though. Just don't kill anyone. :-P

In most cases, that's a good thing though CJ. You know what we're like with BB Guns to start with (and those things bloody piss me off) so imagine what we'd be like with live ammunation. Charvs everywhere will be buying guns just to shoot all the "goffs" as they say.

I'd rather remain intact than be shot by a charv lol.

Although on the other side of things, having a gun for safety only is a good idea. As long as it is...for safety only and not so you can run around with it. :D

it's actually "goths"....so yeah...

anyway, this is pretty much bad news, really..police don't give 2 shits till they have reason to i.e. someone escapes. I don't even think they're gonna find him

They probably won't. He escaped in Texas? There's no doubt in my mind that the guy's smart if he went AWOL in a high-security cell type thing. He'll be smart enough to know that he should get the hell out America and cross that freakin' border by now. They can't touch him over in Mexico....Lucky bastard-o.

I know how it's spelt lol. "Goffs" is the piss-take spelling in reference to charvs lol.

I still have no idea what charvs are...Man, I'm thick. XD

Dale Anthony

Nah no worries lol. Hmm...might need someone like Tharrick to help me with a proper good old explanation but they're basically street kids...in big hoodies who beat the hell outta goths for being...goths. Erm...they offend anyone wearing anything unusual or not bright white with a Kappa-Slappa logo on the front and erm...oh yeah, offend old ladies, listen to banging dance-remix crap (the amount of Roxette songs they've murdered recently is sickening...don't care if you hated them before, but you'll definitely hate them now). Oh...and did I mention large amounts of smoking is involved too?

Ah, I see. We've gots tons and tons of charvs over here. In fact, most of my town is made of stupid charvs. They're basically stupid assholes who hate everyone who even tries to defy boring society. :D

Dale Anthony

Uh-huh! And do your charvs like nothing more t han to offend you whilst in a BIG group of people!?

That's whilst THEY'RE with a big group of people.

They'll get him. Where's the guy gonna go?
