View Full Version : Anti-Virus Program/Virus Remover And Pop-Up Blocker
Yeah i'm looking for those things, as for the pop-up blocker, i'm looking for a decent free (one that you can just keep using, or unless you guys are willing to send me a crack so I won't have to register) that doesn't require you to have to click on stuff. As in liek some when a pop-up comes in the corner some screen will pop up saying you have got a pop-up from whereever and there's liek two options - Block/Allow or something along those lines - I don't want that, just one that can block certain things you choose. And as for the Anti-Virus Program/Remover again, just looking for free decent one (already got an okay spyware remove btw).
This is the pop-up stopper I use, free basic, but it gets the job done ^^ http://www.panicware.com/ First time it stops a pop-up a little thinger pops up saying so, but on it it gives an option to never show it again so it won't annoy you hehe
As for the anti-virus I use avast. http://www.avast.com/ Great free anti-virus with updates and what not, and you can change skins (all sorts of skins for it too) so makes it a bit fun heh. Hope this helps =D

For popup blocking, firefox and windows SP2 :D
For antivirus, I actually PAID for mine :P Mcaffee security centre. Popup blocks, spam blocking, firewall, 'privacy centre' (password-locks the internet :D Good for laptops, as you need the password to remove it or to access the internet, so anyone nicking it is in for a shock) and the virus scanner

I use AVG Free (http://free.grisoft.com) edition with Google Toolbar as pop-up blocker and Windows XP SP2 pop-up blocker. I have no complains with them.
I had an illegal Norton and Mcaffee before, but I didn't like them...
I kinda switched, I did have McAfee but wasn't keen on it so when its subscription ran out I just bought Norton instead.
That along with XP SP2 has never done me wrong.
lol I get pop-ups from IE even though I don't use IE (I use FF obviously) and I think it's because of this one virus I got from MSN ages ago, the only noticable effect it has is that it closes certain programs under certian names. However, when I play a game (often just any full-screen game or sometimes my GBA emulator) for a long while (a few hours or something I dunno) the effect the virus does starts to disappear =/ And yeah it closes anti-virus programs and whatnot, so I guess i'll just play GW for a bit and then go see if I can get rid of it or something lol.
Tharrick: Okay well if you want you can buy me a package too :P
Heck it'd be much easier if I just reformatted my comp cause it is pretty messed up, but I wanna save all the crap I have (mainly the My Documents (pictures, music, vids pretty much) stuff and roms and crap, as for stuff liek games, programs, etc. I can always reinstall them) and yeah it took about an hour to copy one one and half hour movie from my laptop to my sister's comp so god knows how long it'll take to copy the other stuff lol.

Run a spyware killer. I've seen this before, and a single shot of ad-aware solved the problem.
Also, ad-aware's free.
Best antivirus ever used is 'Avast' it completly whups the Mcaffrey antivirus I was using. So, yeah I'd most definatly reccomend Avast antivirus for you and as for pop-up blocker, id have to say the inbuilt one in firefox :P
Yeah, I have the inbuilt pop-up stopper in firefox, but it doesn't stop everything. So I use this other one and I never get a single pop-up^^

Got Norton as my firewall and stuff but I've never actually lookged at my popup blocker before. I'm pretty sure it's a google taskbar addition, it's pretty neat, shows up in the taskbar and you can easily disable it for certain websites.
Tharrick: Well I used ad-aware as my spyware-killer but it doesn't seem to help all that much, similar pop-ups just eventually come back so i'm assuming it has sometimes do with my virus xP. And yeah I use the in-built one for FireFox but liek I said before I get pop-ups from IE even though I never use it anymore.

you also might want to try the following programs:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Spy Sweeper
Spyware Doctor
CWShredder
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
or try Hitman Pro: an All-in-One solution against spyware!
http://members.home.nl/mloman/hitmanpro233.exe
Well honestly i'm too lazy to go and search up those ones so I might just try out the Hitman Pro =P And yeah, thanks I guess lol.
For an Antivirus I use Symantec AntiVirus Corp 10. It's made by the same people who make Norton, only this has all the fat (ie bloated display) cut out, as well as its ability to disable or delete even items loaded in the memory.
Hell, it even detected the IRC worm going around when I made a PHP script to try to print the decoded string they try to get us to //write into IRC XD
Im using Panda anti-virus, it's awesome, i baught mine, but im sure you can get it downloaded through bit torrent or similar.
for Spybot, you can go to http://safer-networking.net. Or just look on http://download.com
I use Spybot and AVG 7.1 Free. I also try to avoid sites that might have spyware and viruses (eg: Kazaa's site) i also keep an eye out on what i download and i make sure that the download is what i intended to get. But the best way to remove viruses is just a reformat. ^.^ also, just so you dont have to keep backing up your files that you want to keep, try partitioning your Hard Drive you can do this with any microsoft windows product (i recommend Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP (either edition) for better security). If you do partition your hard drive, be sure to have at least a 20GB or bigger hard drive. When you partition your hard drive, partition 10-12GB just for the OS. After that you can partition the rest as a whole, or partition it even more (Programs, My Documents, Themes, Apps, etc). Doing so will save you trouble in the long run. (even after partitioning your hard drive, you may want to install an AntiVirus and Spyware program, just incase.)
And how do you do just that exactly o_o lol. Well too bad my comp massively sucks and i've only got 18 GB ; ) Yeah it's liek one from four years ago, but even then it was just "okay" for a laptop xP. Well I think I might just wait until I get a new computer (god knows when that is o_o) and then yeah, copy the files I want over onto here and just reinstall stuff back on (gawd.... that'll take awhile lol).
I have actually used Norton and Norton Internet Security. I find that the second slows down my PC significantly and is not needed.
