View Full Version : Animal Testing - Your view.
Just been watching the news and saw about these protests about the building of a new animal testing lab in Oxford (I think) and I began to wonder what everyone elses views on animal testing was.
Personally I'm all for it in the medical sense like testing new lifesaving drugs and stuff but I am completly against it for any non medical reason.

Speaking as a biochemist, do you know how few medications we'd have if we didn't have animal testing?
People would die from a great many diseases that these days can be cured with a few tablets. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of extra dead humans, for the sake of a few bunny rabbits?
On the other hand, animal testing for cosmetics and other such nonsense, I don't approve of that at all.
For medical reasons, yes, because it can actually save someone's life
For cosmetics, no, because to be honest, you don't really need them, they're an 'extra' in life...
Well yeah like you guys all said, depends what it's for. If it's for medical reasons then yeah I don't mind and all that, but as for anything else (well... again depends) then no I don't really approve. Do you know what the animal testing lab was for exactly? Or is it liek for any kind of animal testing?
I think ther should be no testing for animals, I think the company has enough money to efford a dude that sacrifices his health for (a few) dollars/euro.
plenty of people that would be doing that with pleasure.
as long as it is no shamp00.
we in the netherlands see it daily in the newspaper, for arounf the 100-2500 euro that's almost the same as the dollar, right ? (i think i'm pretty close)
I don't Like animal testing at all. I live near Oxford too.

I don't like anything that harms animals but sometimes that decision has to be made and that's why we have cold hearted people do it.

This isn't a cosmetics testing place they're building, Jiros. This is a lab to test medical treatments and to try to give us insight into and cures for diseases which currently are incureable. By harming a couple of hundred chimps or bunnies, we may well find a cure for a disease which would otherwise kill hundreds of thousands of humans. It's a worthwhile trade, I think.

Don't call it a trade that makes it sound worse. At least call it a sacrifice and put in proper context. It may just be a couple hundred mice but that's still a couple hundred mice to save millions. It still shouldn't be taken so lightly.
P.S. And if anyone poses the question: What would you rather save in a fire if you only had one choice blah blah blah I'm gonna loose my temper. I don't like answering those questions because it's not a fair choice! And it would be the fireman's job anyway :P
animal testing the other few people above medical testing. no cosmetics bull shit or giving a monkey a pill for testing to see if it will gte all sex crazy so people can use it with there problems.

A couple of hundred mice is nothing compared to millions of human lives. As for taking it 'lightly', do you have ANY idea the stress that people who have to experiment on animals have to GO through?
In America, PETA is known to sponsor TERRORIST organisations - they burn down restaurants and blow up labs. They dug up some guy's dead granny and put the corpse on his lawn. They regularly assault, beat, try to murder scientists. Nobody doing actual valuable animal research takes it 'lightly'
Don't call it a trade that makes it sound worse. At least call it a sacrifice and put in proper context.
A sacrifice IS a trade :P Just trading something more important than is usually traded every day.

I didn't say the researchers took it lightly. I'm saying there are people who brush it off as nothing and say "Oh it's just animals!" I don't like it when people take that attitude - I think it's immorale - and that they should be more grateful to live in a country where medical science is so advanced.
But yes I agree that the treatment of genuine medical researchers is bad because at this point in time we have no other way of finding these things out - I'd just rather not do it myself.
P.S.

Disclaimer: in this statement i give the life of an animal the same value as the live of an human!
I approve animal testing, both for medical as well as cosmetic reasons but only under strict conditions.
I'm gonna explain with examples!
example 1: someone has created a new medicine that looks like to save loads of people, like an actual possible cure for AIDS . my opinion: APPROVED, even if it means that about 1000 rat's get killed.... nowadays more people die of AIDS.
example 2: in the path of seeking a medicine for AIDS every single solution get's tested upon animals. NOT APPROVED, try a petri dish before XD
example 3: after making a new makeup, and testing trough various methods if it's not harmful, just verifieing all of the results. APPROVED, as long as there are not too many animals used.... it would be nasty to find out your new make-up gives you burns... when you've sold 1000000 pieces of it... better to notice that on 5 rats.... loads less....
example 4: after making a new hairspray, and testing trough various methods if it's not harmful, spraying it in the eye of the rat. NOT APPROVED, try your own eye's first... it wasn't harmful... right....
example 5: after making a new type of pepperspray, testing on animals if it's working. NOT APPROVED, why don't you try your own eyes...
so basically as long as they give those animals the same value of a human... i APPROVE!
I didn't say the researchers took it lightly. I'm saying there are people who brush it off as nothing and say "Oh it's just animals!" I don't like it when people take that attitude - I think it's immorale - and that they should be more grateful to live in a country where medical science is so advanced.
I don't think anyone's trying or meaning to say that here. If they are trying to say that, that's extremely harsh towards the animals, and they really should get a heart!
For medical reasons...yeah I can live with that. But cosmetics is just wrong... being cruel to animals so someone can have slightly smoother skin is surely as bad as fox hunting, and I feel it should be outlawed as such.
To what gareth said, I think its incredibly horrible the things that some of the scientists who do legitimate work for medicine have to suffer the way they do at the hands of protesters who threaten them and do indeed do things like exhume bodies of dead relatives and ransom them back etc etc. I think that in these circumstances the protesters are the worst people going. And then they make a big song and dance when they arn't listened to. Would you think that anyone who dug up your grandparent or parents after they had died were worth even considering listening to? I know i wouldn't.

Well at least we all agree that we wish animals didn't have to be used... and that we think protesters do more harm than good.
Maybe if the protesters REALLY want to stop it they should let the tests be done on them instead since it seems like they have nothing better to do - sure they get all up in arms about animals being hurt but they forget what the more important issue are like stopping wars!
Or why can't they do a more useful protest like one to outlaw fox hunting!!! Damn those lazy bums! They just wanna wreck stuff!!!

Fox hunting's illegal over here :D
And damn straight! I can't believe some of the arguments I heard against the ban...one of the most prominent was "it's tradition". Well....so were WITCH burnings, that doesn't make it all right!

lol very true.
Oh and there were some protesters in the city centre today protesting about the war and how the soliders should pull out of Iraq and how America has now got it's sights on Iran so I yelled at them "GET A JOB!" - lol - I swear the guy heard me that was so funny...
But if I remember rightly its us who are keeping the peace and stopping bad people from doing a vicious take over.

I thought it was still legal! It's about time it wasn't!!!
On the animal testing matter, this one's a weird one for me. For medical advances, I have no problem what-so-ever. But personally, I'd testit on the criminals and that (but that's because I'm one of those people who support the death sentence - but that's not the point here). For cosmetics, I'm afraid I have to disagree. To be honest, cosmetics just give us more reason to be insecure, and they're not a neccessity for us to live. Okay so you can say that it's better to realise it would give people burns and what not BEFORE you sell millions of them, but why bother making them in the first place. Oh yeah, that's the wonderful world we live in isn't it? ¬_¬
I don't think it's fair to inflict pain on any living thing, but there are some things in life that we have no choice over. We can't have it both ways, and I'm sure testing is not done if it is not required.

I really love animals so i hate animal testing but we should just accept it 'coz it's also for us humans right...???:(

I'm going to play devils' advocate here.. Apologies to anyone who gets offended, I'm just trying to get a decent debate.
"We are better than animals, and that gives us every right to use them for whatever needs they can serve."
If God [or whatever higher power you believe in, Darwin included ;)] intended animals to be treated the same as us, why didn't he make them equal to us? Simple, because he wanted us to use them. As so it is well within our right to use animals however we see fit.
***Disclamer: I don't actually believe this, I just want to make some discussion.
I am not sure about this myself actually. I think it could go either way. Maybe good or bad.

animal testing is needed, testing on something else may prove to have worse results.
people who are against medical animal testing are ignorant, and will lead the world into a generation of uncurable disease if they succed.

Well I dont totally agree with it but I disagree animal testing on Monkeys because there the best animal ever!
But seriously Animal testing has one good effect, one bad, the good being that we get the best from products and stuff, the bad obviously being it can harm an animal which is never good.

im not exactly an animal guy so im not hardly bothered.
well seeing as to everyone else basically has a similar view to mine i guess ill just make it simple. For medical purposes against cosmetic purposes.
You would not test a human on new Drugs so why there use animals animals have no say what happens they have no rights

Er... yes we do. Small-scale clinical human trials before a new drug is mass-released.
