Note: THis is more complete than the Sony report as I made notes during the conference!
Today saw Nintendo's retailiation to the PS3 spectacular, and if you don't want to read on I'll say this: The PS3 free moving controller is a nice extra feature, the Wii controller is genius. Nintendo said in the conference they wanted to break down barriers, and I must admit, from a poor view of the Wii earlier, its moved up only slightly behind the PS3 in my "Best Console" listing.
The lineup for the Wii sees titles such as Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Red Steel and Mario Galaxy, but for sure the flagship game will be Zelda: Twighlight Princess. Players control using the analog stick on the "Nunchuck" controller for movement, and simple slashing occurs with the B button. However, more complex moves, or aiming an arrow or boomerand are done via the Wii remote, allowing actual aiming. This game was also by far the best graphically, equalling some of those on the 360, though not up to PS3 standard. Nintendo can be forgiven for this though, as their innovative control system is very VERY good, in the hands of the right developer. THis will also be a launch title.
Red Steel, a FPS using both guns and swords looks alright, but the sword play seems a little too much "Swing and hope" like in the arcade. Metroid Prime 3 is set to be a more effective use of the Wii as a FPS.
Another feature is "Wii Connect 24", allowing the Wii to remain on standby mode 24/7 using very little power, and can remain constantly connected to the internet, apparantly an advantage in games like Animal Crossing, I'm afraid I missed why thanks to streaming problems.
The Wii will be released sometime Q4 2006, but the exact date is yet to be announced, as is the price.
As for the DS, new titles include Final Fantasy III, with improved 3D graphics, YOSHI, Tony Hawks, Downhill Jam...
...and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which picks up where Windwaker left off.
