Retail giant Best Buy has begun taking preorders for the Final Fantasy VII remake for PlayStation 3 (see for yourself right here (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7858605&type=product&id=1142300188021) -- an event we found curious, considering the fact that Square Enix has repeatedly told the press that the game hasn't been confirmed (as evidenced in this story (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/709/709775p1.html)) and was only intended to be a tech demo for the PS3 hardware at E3 2005.

As always, your buddies here at IGN contacted Square Enix representatives to see what the story is. Here's what they had to say:

"We have confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII is in development, but have NOT confirmed a FF7 remake at any time. The remake has been a popular subject for rumors, but that's all they are. Obviously the Best Buy listing was made in error."

Is Final Fantasy VII PS3 the rumor that wouldn't die?

It could be possible that they are remaking it but they dont want anything released until its like going to be released, like a surprise.

I can't really see them springing it on us, and it would be almost impossible to keep quiet if it were actually happening.

but serious, it would be cool if they did that!

I think they are, or they will. All thjeir denials don;t seem to actually deny it.

If I was at SE and wanted to tell people there was no FF7 remake planned, I would say "There is NO FF7 remake planned" rather than "We have not confirmed a remake".

It AT THE VERY LEAST suggests to me that they're thinking about it.

We'd have heard about it properly by now, from some actual proper leaked source, rather than just people jumping around saying 'The guy who mows the lawn of my brother's nephew's flatmate's sister says there's going to be an FF7 remake!'

Seems like BestBuy removed the product from their list.

Ain't really fond of a remake. Let the game rest, all those complilations already...

Square have also said if they were to remake FF7 with new: Graphics, A Battle system and a game engine at PS3 standards, it would take them 5 Years at the minimum.
I'm all for a re-make but a new RTB battle system won't be a real good improvement.
