Hi all,

A few weeks ago, I decided that I would not be playing FFXI anymore, so I took it off of my computer. Some weeks later, I just got the idea to put it back on just in case my cousin wanted me to play it, or a friend, whatever. So, I re-installed it, along with the expansions.

Just last night, a friend of mine asked me to log on to his account to move his character from Whitegate (because his connection there is so bad) and as I had FFXI installed on my computer again, I agreed. After the version update from the adjustments to the jobs and whatnot, I clicked on the 'Play' selection at the FFXI main screen, and again after the disclaimer. Then it would load, a black screen would momentarily show up as full-screen and then it wouldn't even start FFXI up at all. It would just go back to the previous one in the windowed POL viewer. There was no error or anything that showed up in a message, asking me to click OK.

I tried fixing the config for both the POL viewer and FFXI itself. I checked tried 'Check Files,' changing the overlay and background resolution...what else could it be? Unless my registration codes somehow expired while on my friends' account, will I just have to go buy FFXI again? Or should I just keep trying to fix the configurations? I have enough free space on my hard drive as well, and I could play the game before. I was also playing it on another account on this same computer before, and it had a different resolution.

I've tried as many things as I can think of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System specs:

DirectX 9.0
Main memory: 90MB of free space, 382MB capacity
C:\ Free space 32.86MB, 65.94MB capacity
Graphics card: ATI Mobility Raedon Xpress 200
And I have Windows XP (Vista compatible) and AMD Turion64.

It may be the graphics card, and, if it is, how would I get an updated one?

Hmm that's weird. Do you have to download all of your friend's items and stuff to your computer to make it play correctly when using your friend's account? The first thing I could think of is maybe there was an error while downloading or installing one of the patches or expansions or something of the sort. But the roots of the problem could be even deeper. If your friend's inventory and stuff has to download to your computer, maybe it's not accepting the download or something. Do you use a firewall that might be blocking FFXI?

I have my Anti-Virus and Firewalls turned off at the moment. I even got my account back and when I tried to play on mine, the same problem would occur - the black full-screen that comes up for a split-second, then it goes back to the POL viewer.

I'll try uninstalling everything everything and re-installing again I suppose. So tedious. ; ;

Hmm that does sound weird indeed. Yeah, I'd say try uninstalling it and re-installing the game. It's obviously not the firewall in that case. I've never played the game myself, so I don't know of any common problems the users can face, but I have played GW before and when I put it on my laptop, it had to download all of the items and stuff my char had, and my firewall for some reason prevented it from downloading the rest when I told it allow GW to access the net, and I couldn't re-download the stuff and I couldn't play it either. I re-installed GW and got it to work after that. Let me know if re-installing it helps or not. =)

Do you use Windower? If you do it might be an outdated version, SE updates to break windower all the time. Download the latest version and see if it fixes it.

*cough*I in no way condone using Windower...yeah... >.>;; *cough*

You don't need another version to let your friend play on your installation.

If re-installing doesn't fix the problem, make sure that your graphics card is running on the latest driver.
If that still doesn't fix the problem go to PlayOnline Support (https://secure.playonline.com/supportus/) and talk to a representative via web chat.
