Can't believe there hasn't been a thread made for discussion about this fine game. Final Fantasy Tactics (PSOne) was far better than Tactics Advance, but I won't get into any lengthy comparisons. Nope, I'm here to talk about the epic-ness that is the original Tactics. While this game would have been rather hard to come by if you lived in a PAL gaming region such as myself, if you were resourceful enough you could have ensnared yourself a copy with ease so there really is no excuse if you missed out. On the PSOne, this game is my second-favourite Final Fantasy after IX.

Anyhow, I'm a huge fan of the 'Strategy RPG' genre. From Vandal Hearts to Disgaea; I love them all. While I do know that FF Tactics borrowed a lot from Tactics Ogre (Hellgate --> Deep Dungeon anyone?) I don't let that fact bother me because I enjoy both games with a passion. The Job System was perfected nicely in this game, and provided a lot of nostalgia for Final Fantasy V, indeed...

The story was great, and of typical 'dark history/religion/war' elements that we know and love for these types of games. The array of interesting characters was impressive, and the layout of the world boded well for me. The battles were of traditional TRPG fare, so I found them to only be semi-challenging from time to time. Safely put, Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favourite overall TRPGs of all time.

Tactics Advance? Eh, it ain't an official sequel, so I'd be mighty happy if one day on the PS3 we were blessed with a 'Final Fantasy Tactics 2', but I won't hold my breath...

I've download the game (damn Square for not releasing it here), but I haven't started with the game. I think its because I don't really like Strategy RPGs and I have SO much games to play.

The only Strategy RPG I ever played was Legend of Kartia, but I quit playing it, cause it was getting quite boring.

I read that Tactics (PS1) relied too much on ye olde Totally Random Outcome institution. The reviewer said that FFT's greatest issue was that a given set of tactics would always result in wildly different results for the same battle.

Battle A (first time) + Tactic A = perfect win
Battle A (again, for fun) + Tactic A = total destruction

True?

I don't see how randomness is perfection, but I'll take your statement as a measurement of the game's overall fun rating. If I'm not rewarded for using my brain, then what's the point of the "Tactics" suffix?

I suppose I'll just have to play it to see what all the fuss is about. I did enjoy FFTA. The theory just sounds terrible, though.
