View Full Version : [Forums] Important (Please vote) - "Academic tutors"
I put this idea forward to Zidane and to judge whether or not it would be a good idea, he's let me put up a poll.
My idea is this - In the 'our lives' forum we should perhaps put a sub-forum where people can request help with school work, not asking people to do their homework or coursework for them, but if they don't understand things they've been taught in class they can ask for help from others who understand the topic. For example say 'user x' posts saying that they've been through 'organic synthesis' in chemistry that day and they are really completely lost people who study chemistry or who have a good knowledge of the topic could post and help explain how it works as many times and in as many ways as that person needed.
Basically its like a small tutor system and although it may not be accessed a large amount, it may just help people who really need help and I know we have a good amount of members who are participating in further education and others still who would be able to give invaluable assistance.
So theres the case put forward, would all who have read this please vote, the poll will be open for 5 days.
If you have any questions before you vote, reply to this thread with your question or just PM me
Thanks for your time

I'm a bit on the fence on this one.
Given how this isn't a technology forum where all users expectedly take BSc in Computing at their local colleges, the diversity of questions asked would probably result in dozens of threads with 0 replies. This in turn makes users feel ignored.
The other scenario of dozens of threads with 5-6 replies of "I don't know anything about $subject, but try Google or maybe someone else can help..." isn't the slightest bit better.
Not saying it's definitely not going to work, just being sceptical.
I know what you mean, we could always try splitting it into certain subjects like maths, science, english etc just as an example. If we try to keep it tight it could work in my opinion. At the end of the day if we can at least help a few people I would consider it a victory.
Hmm, I'd say "go for it". But there's always the chance that it won't turn out pretty, like Belazor said, some people getting tons of help, and someone getting none. That's enough to probably make the ones not getting help jealous and rather pirssed off.
But yeah, I think a subforum like that could end up going well. And I choose to give it the benefit of the doubt and vote 'Yes'. ^^

It sounds to me like a very good idea. Helps that two of my classes actually are on the computer and just as well it gives me an excuse to be on here while doing my work. It can really help me get out of a bind in some cases, although responses may be faster through the shoutbox.
I think it should be fine. And if it turns out ugly, we can always get rid of it. Try it, at least, I say. This will work if there are many minors out there(like 14-17 year olds) with school subject problems, because at least a bunch of us here are old enough to actually know the answer to most subject questions, since we've been to school ourselves(At least, I presume so XD lol). So I think we should try it, and see how it works out. =P
I'm gonna vote no. Mainly because, we're not here for that, this is a discussion forum about RPGs and we're not here to help people with their homework, I also don't believe it would be used so much that we should keep it around, but i see nothing wrong with a trial period and of course if i can help someone I will, but I don't think it's a great idea

Pretty sure they have (free) sites on the web dedicated to things like this. Don't think it will be used much either. ;<

Its a good idea. So I say go for it but as they say it could get messy

and im pretty sure those free sites on the intarweb are about as relaible as the original xbox.ithink the idea is fairly good just would have
block people who would'nt take it seriously and spam and flame it up.
Lol personally it's not going to work.
Pretty much for the all reason that's already been said.
And liek some of the posts I see around the forum, some of the "help" users will probably get (liek Belazor said) are posts liek " oh ummm I don't know anything about that but I think google or wikipedia (whatever) might help with that" or something along the lines.
I also sort of agree with what Grae said - we are a RPG forum but at the same time, not everything here is about RPG's and we do discuss other stuff besides RPG's so why not this? I guess we could give it a try but don't get your hopes it IMO. Unless there are some people who are willing to put in a little bit of effort and whatnot, it might work, but otherwise - prob not.

I don't think its a good idea either and it won't really be much of use. You can always ask your classmates for help (on MSN for example) if you don't know what to do (that's what I do).
And this forum is mainly a RPG forum and I don't want to make it too off-topic.
