Tiny things, mitochondria. You need a powerful microscope to see them, but you'd die without them. Little things that were once organisms in their own right, sat in each and every one of your cells churning out the energy that keeps you alive, makes you tick.
But what happens when these things decide that they've had enough?
Neo-Mitochondrial Creatures. NMCs. Animalistic brutal things, twisted mockeries of the people and beasts they used to be. Shapes changed by apoptosis, the programmed cell death that the body in normal times uses to protect itself from cancer. Driven insane by conflicting neural and endocrine triggers as their nervous systems misfire. Killers. Man-eaters.
Artificial NMCs. This state can be triggered scientifically, can be controlled. The shapes taken by each creature can be chosen, and devices implanted in them to train and control the beasts. Some of the people that become ANMCs are taken from the streets, from homeless shelters. Others submit to the process voluntarily.
But why?
The answer is telomerase. An enzyme, telomerase extends short lengths of DNA, the telomeres, that protect DNA from damage. Telomeres naturally become shorter during the life of any organism, and very few cells can express telomerase to correct this. But every one of an NMCs cells expresses this enzyme - a human who becomes an ANMC will live forever, unless killed by violence or mishap. Some consider the loss of control and of will to be an acceptable trade-off for a new body and eternal life.
Not all will accept this. NMCs are dangerous, and ANMCs are illegal. The FBI created a special division, the Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team (MIST). The Hunters of MIST track down outbreaks of anything that triggers mitochondrial awakening.
-------------------------
This is an RP based on the Squaresoft game, Parasite Eve. But rather than involving a being with super-powers granted by mitochondrial awakening, this game will focus on the normal, unenhanced human members of MIST as they investigate and root out NMC activity throughout America.
Rules are standard: No god-modes. No super powers. In addition, players are expected to have a basic grasp of the English language, and are asked to kindly refrain from text-speak or leet.
Bios in the format listed below:
Name:
Age:
Hair/Eye colour:
Skills:
Appearance: (Remember. You're technically an FBI agent - try to keep it looking vaguely professional :P)
Background: (I expect this to be at least reasonably detailed)
Weapon of choice: (While MIST Hunters can spend the bounties from their NMC kills on new weaponry, and have access to a range of weapons, I expect this to be kept vaguely realistic. This is set in 2009, so weapons are almost all still of modern design. In addition, I'd like to point out that they didn't make very many Desert Eagles, and they're uncommon weapons. I'm just a little fed up of how many there seem to be floating around in pop culture. Be a little more imaginative, please)
Note: While you may well see a lot of scientific jargon floating around, it's not in any way necessary that you have any understanding of it - and not understanding it will have no effect on your enjoyment of the game (or so I hope). I just like to show off, is all :P
Name: Drake Heir
Age: 24
Hair/Eye colour: Dark Brown/Black
Skills: Mechanics
Appearance: Wears a black jacket (like the one in the Avatar) over a dark blue buttoned shirt. Long black Khakis and white Nike sneakers. He usually walks with his hands in his jacket pocket as he walks around but never slumps. He wears his Hair usually untidy and always wears a friendly care-free smile. U22 holster on the back of his belt, combat knife sheath on the left side.
Background: Drake was always one to learn fast, especially when it came to machines. Everything from cars to fire arms. He built his first handgun at the age of ten and his first car at fourteen. Drake's family was around the lower high class his dad working as a head engineer for NASA. Drake seemed to love being in the workshops there and usually skipped school to hang out and work at the machines breaking them apart and putting them back together. After graduating from high school Drake went off free-lancing as a mechanic for everything. He joined Beretta for about a year where he found he had a talent for shooting. His weapon of choice was the Beretta U22 Neos. After awhile he began to use the gun in both hands growing in ambidextrous shooting later on being able to use two guns. Before quitting Beretta Drake customized a U22 Neos, he was later found and hired by MIST and that is where he currently resides.
Weapon of choice: Beretta U22 Neos Custom. Blowback semi automatic shooting capabilities, 20 round Cartridges (uses Custom type .22 LR for a range of up to 200 meters with no drop or flight path disturbance), Iron integral scope mount, 300% recoil decrease for better aiming and faster shooting, 7.5 inch barrel on each. (Keeps more than enough ammunition on hand at all times), Combat knife just in case.

Whoa, Genesis.. might want to remove that pic, or use a thumbnail... it's massive :p
Name: Abel Vaughan
Age: 31
Hair/Eye colour: Black/Green
Skills: Geneticist/biologist
Appearance: Short, lean and well-muscled, Abel wears a well-tailored suit on investigation duties and around the office. For dedicated field work, he wears black fatigues.
Background: Abel was an FBI expert in genetics and biology, a career he'd been heading for since high school. While his investigatory skills were middle-of-the-road, his skills in genetics brought him to the attention of MIST. Following this headhunting came a period of intensive combat training to bring him up to an acceptable level of skill. Recent shake-ups in the Los Angeles office has resulted in his transfer from Washington, to provide biological expertise to the smaller outfit
Weapon of choice:
- Backup: Ruger Super Redhawk revolver chambered for .454 Casull hunting cartridge. Abel's hobbies include pistol hunting of medium to big game, and many of the skills translated effectively to NMC hunting. The stopping power is more than sufficient for dealing with most medium to large NMCs, but the rate of fire and capacity leaves a lot to be desired
- Primary: In the field, Abel carries an FN P90. The short weapon has enough stopping power to take down many NMCs, but is short and compact enough that it doesn't interfere with his equipment.
(Bio still in progress, but I doubt I'll get much more done tonight.)
I removed it, but I don't really know how to make a thumbnail ^^;; Hope the profile is ok with you

Profile looks OK, but I'd suggest you go and have a look at how badly packing 2 pistols screws up your accuracy :P
o.o good point, escaped my mind for a second ^^;;

There's only one time that two handguns is really acceptable, and that's when you're packing really old single-action revolvers, when you need to unload each shell manually before you can reload each shell manually, so carrying two gives you twice the ammunition. Even then, you empty one gun before firing the other :p
lol, yea, if only the world had the same laws of physics as Devil May Cry and Hellsing. . . .

It's not a matter of physics - it's a matter of biology. You can only focus on one thing at a time, so you can only aim down one gun at a time.
But yes, if only :(
Name: Jason Blait
Age: 23
Hair/Eye colour: Green/Brown
Skills: Electronics
Appearance: Jason's tastes often disagreed with his pay grade. He also had two outfits (one for fieldwork and the other for more formal occasions/officework). The latter consisted of his bespoke pin-striped dark navy suit. He felt it was only fitting (excuse the pun). For fieldwork he often ditched his suit jacket and tie in exchange for an overcoat and armoured vest.
Jason sports a pair of black thin framed photo-reactive glasses, often found at the end of his nose when he's been sat at the computer for a few too many hours. His hair is a dark brown tousled affair, upon which he has given up all hope of trying to manage it (for the record it is clean :p).
Athletic build. Average height.
Background: Straight A student, always in the top three in his class at school, but that all changed in his teens. Kicked out of one of the most prestigious private institutions for no-longer pulling his weight and skipping lessons, Jason's parents tried to home-school him best they could, with some of the best tutors in the country. The reason for this sudden disruption to what seemed like a perfect student? Ahh well we can blame technology for that....more precisely the PC. Jason spent hours, nay, weeks sat in front of his screen perfecting various skills that would make him one of the most proficient hackers in the Boston area. He used his schools as a test bed for most of his written code - The groundskeeper did find it odd that the sprinkler system was set off without the usual switches being flipped. The older and more experienced the boy became, the more adventurous the hacks, often teaming up with an underground network of hackers to which he was introduced to for excelling in various games online.
His parents often worried about him as they went about their jobs, his father a wealthy venture capitalist, his mother an actuary. They often wished that Jason would have followed in their footsteps, rather than sitting in his room playing 'games'. He did take his SAT, which he aced - although he did have a back-up result planned to implant in the database just in case he failed. Using the result and his father's connections, he managed to secure a place at MIT, where he majored in Computer Science, scoring 100% in his Network Security and Software Engineering modules. He was also the longest serving captain of the Shooting Team: For his four years at university he was captain and won various trophies in his chosen disciplines - usually High Calibre and The Three Mile Shot. He didn't know where his aptitude came from, some put it down to years of playing first-person-shooters, others just luck.
He applied to the FBI, who after extensive testing put him in a standard data security role as a White Hack. Within a month of MIST's creation he was enlisted for his skills.
Weapon of choice: Mobile Phone? PDA? PC? Any of those can be equally dangerous in Jason's hands, from overloading circuits to turning off the friendly recognition system on automated defenses. Naturally he can't carry a server around with him, but he does carry a top of the range PDA which doubles as his mobile phone. As for real hardware, Jason will often opt to snipe from afar as it is his expertise in theory and the silenced SVU fits that bill nicely. However he would gladly trade that for an M95 if that extra punch was needed. For those up close and personal situations he switches out to a SIG Sauer P229.
OOC: - It's been a long long long while -

This looks like a great RP. I'll post a bio up and if it gets approved, I'll bum around until your next scenario. =D
Name: Marcus Payne
Age: 44
Hair/Eye Colour: White/Dark blue
Skills: CQC (in the form of martial arts)/Demolitions/Marksmanship
Appearance: Marcus is around 6'5" and of an athletic build. He has unassuming facial features which are that of a middle-aged man. He wears rectangular mirror shades, and is rarely seen without them. He wears some form of bullet-proof armour on his torso at all times, mainly underneath his shirt. In investigative duties, he wears a crisp dark suit, and for field work, he wears black fatigues with a hard-plate ballistics vest.
Background: Marcus Payne is considered to be one of the more senior employees of the FBI. After a short career in the NYPD, he was transferred to the DEA for his exceptional detective work on grueling drug operations in various locales. Marcus then applied for a job in the FBI, graduating with flying colours at the age of 29.
Marcus' knowledge of the ANMC threat during his work has made him a wise Agent, and his experience in various encounters has often led him to take on many instructor roles in the Bureau. However, with the threat seemingly escalating, Marcus managed to apply for a position in MIST without too much trouble.
He has a daughter who aspires to follow in his footsteps as a DEA Agent.
Weapon of choice: As the essential gunslinger, Marcus is very liberal with his choice of weaponry, and will usually carry two primary weapons with a sidearm and combat knife. These weapons include:
-Primary: FN P90: Marcus Payne's preferred weapon, modified with sound suppression.
-Primary: Remington 1100 (12 gauge): Marcus Payne's preferred second weapon. This is usually slung over his shoulder during field duty.
-Primary: M14: An old M14 rifle that practically no-one uses, Marcus has rudimentary knowledge of its use and will occasionally use it for certain operations with the role of a marksman.
-Primary: Colt CAR-15: Another rifle that practically no-one uses, Marcus occasionally spends his free time attempting to modify the weapon to use 120-round ammunition belts to emulate the M2 variant.
-Backup: Five-seveN USG: Marcus Payne's preferred sidearm.
-Backup: Colt Single Action Army: This gun was given to Marcus by his father, an old World War II veteran who was also a retired policeman. It is constantly kept close by to Marcus and is constantly maintained and loaded.
Miscellaneous: As a demolitions specialist, Marcus also brings in operations an assortment of hand grenades of many kinds; fragmentation, concussion, smoke, incendiary, flashbang etc. Marcus is also skilled at applying and using explosives like satchel charges.
..... if you think this guy's bogged down in weight, he is a little bit, but the only difference is the fact that he's got a lot of grenades and an extra primary. =P

Satsugai - it all looks OK to me, and we were lacking in a combat specialist so you're filling a good niche there. Another Fabrique Nationale fan then? :P
Should just point out that while carrying a combat knife is something I'd always approve of, engaging an NMC or ANMC in hand-to-hand combat is suicide - as you'll notice from my first post in the in-character thread, they can generally tear through modern body armour as though it were tissue paper, so don't expect to be using it for the intended purpose too much :P
If you want to drop in sooner, just say that the boss has sent you in as backup :P
Keiskay - I have MAJOR problems with any player who just digs out random internet artwork to represent their character. I have even bigger problems with people who use established characters' official artwork. You are NOT John Constantine. If you're having creativity problems due to moving house, wait until you're done before joining. If you want to use a picture of your character, it had better be one that you either drew yourself or had drawn specifically for the character.
