View Full Version : [forum]Spam
Okay, HHN seems to be filling up with mindless spam. I'm not saying I don't do it, I have done it, and I try my best not to anymore, but there are three main threads I can see that have just turned into mindless chatter and I think we really need to combat this.
The Marriage Thread, Image Gallery and the "Girls are the Rare Species..." thread seem to have just become random chatter.
And moderators are supposed to stop all this, yet I don't see any doing anything? The spam is the main reason why people like myself and others like Lei and Hideto don't post much anymore, because there really is nowhere to add constructive posts... you can't really reply to something such as "omfg your hair is green!" ... "omfg oh noes!" ...
I'm not saying I have the moral highground here, I admit I have posted some useless posts, and I'm not meaning to point fingers at people - although one person seems to think I'm blaming them completely - but I think its just getting a bit out of hand now, and that the mods should do something and stop it before it gets even worse.

I've posted a similar thing in 7th Heaven. I want you and anyone else to post there as a pedition of some sort (I hope that's right).

I have an excellent and vital idea. I think all the posts besides word games should be over 3 lines long because people have a habit of removing the discussion from a discussion. For example, some people say they hate something but no opinion is ever provided to defend their comments. It then just looks a lot like a post that ain't required and the sole purpose for it being there is credibility. If people bash a certain clan, band, movie, person or game then they should have an honest and valid point to make to back-up what they just submitted. Do I make sense?
Well the spam in those thread isn't exactly stuff like... "omfg your hair is green!" ... "omfg oh noes!" ... but it's just basically off-topic posts is all, like they've gone nothing to do with teh ACTUAL topic and yes i'll admit to contributing to the "Girls are the Rare Species..." spam, but it's not actual spam where it's a pointles, stupid, meaningless post which makes no sense, but rather just off-topic stuff =/ Which can be sometimes pointless, xD. Look this is why we need a SPAM section, for "chatter" like the ones in those threads you've mentioned Chris... A spam section wouldn't be for COMPLETELY stupid threads which are about absolutely NOTHING, but rather just like... stuff worth dicussing or talking about, but like is considered spam if you were to post it on the normal boards. If you get what I mean... xP.
I'd be surprised if vBulletin doesn't have an option to disable post counts in a board like a spam board...

It does, cause I beleive your post count isn't raised when you post in forum games.

Yes, it's possible to do that. Please take my idea into consideration though.

Yes, it's possible to do that. Please take my idea into consideration though. You got the idea from SquareUltima, I remember you from there.
I would have to say, I hate the idea.
Why, you ask?
Because I feel it is unneeded to force a certain amount of lines. Why not make the rule "You must backup your claim, ..." and all the other stuff that a 3 line rule would insinuate? It is quite possible to make a valid point contributing to the discussion, and not fill 3 lines. It is also quite possible that 3 lines will only have 1 relevant line.
Whether or not a post should be marked as spam and dealt with accordingly, should not be based on length so much as contents. If the moderator cannot find the time to read each post more thoroughly than "this is not 3 lines, hence it's spam", then s/he does not deserve to be a moderator.

Ive spammed but im not gonna say sorry for it. I think I might get quite bored
here at HHN if I have to stay on subject for to long. So if you were to make a
spamming area that I could feed my off subject urges I would be very happy
to stay on subject elsewhere. I mean come on is it really fun to obey rules all
the time?

It's not so much it all being spam, it's more just threads going really off-topic. Mods themself are going off-topic so it's hard to stay on-topic but maybe a place where post counts don't count but general disscussion can happen would help.

You're very observant. I did indeed get the idea from those forums, but you have to admit they do have a reason for that. I won't mention any names, but I have noticed stuff like this in some topics:
Random person #1
I saw Titanic last night. I thought it was one of the best movies ever made. Leonardo Di Capreo's portrayal of blah blah blah was one of his best performances yet due to James Cameron's awesome direction, etc.
Random person #2
yeah...i saw it too. i hated it.
Which one would you say is clearly the better post?
I understand that, but you missed a bit of my point. Let me elaborate.
This post, IMO, makes a valid statement yet doesn't pass the 3 line rule:
I like Rikku the most, she has a great attitude.
You answered the topic (presumably it was "Who's your fave FFX(-2) character?"), you gave a reason for your statement, yet you didn't post 3 lines. Even though it would sound weird, grammatically, you could split the line and get 2 sentences, which STILL doesn't cover the rule.
Threads like "Fave [game] character" is not ment for discussion, and as such further strengthening your point with beating around the bush to fill out your 2nd and 3rd line would just increase spam, or in worst case turn an user away from posting in fear of being warned. (IMO, I would understand and respect it if you have a different way of viewing such threads).
That is just ONE exception, and although I cannot come up with any other examples valid to this point off hand, I feel that a rule that needs or has too many exceptions is not a well formulated rule.

NeoRaven has a good point, making a user post 3 lines would just increase the need to add stuff that is off-topic to their post just to fill those 3 lines. HNH currently has like a 5 word limit, if i'm just posting in a thread like ff word rope where I don't need to explain anything just post the next word I always have to add more to it to fill the limit. So making 3 lines would make it harder to fill the limit.

But I think if you've got a 3 paragraph post that has to do with what somone said in a thread but doesn't realy relate to the topic in the thread then that is NOT spam. But if you have 1 little stupid thing to say like "Oh, you spelled that wrong" or "Foo! you crazy, shut up!" Then THAT is spam. But if we always just stuck to the topic like glue we'd have to make new topic every single friggin time we had something a little different to say, and I think Posting a bunch is better than making a shyte-load of threads.
I think Grace had a good idea, posts should be more than 100 Characters in places like Mature discussion and 7th Heaven. BEcause if you don't have at least 25+ words to say then why are you typing? But if the topic is about beans, and then throughout the discssion maybe somone says that beans are better than eggs, I think it's perfectly okay for the next person to write a 3 paragraph essay on the life cycle of an egg. Although it wouldn't apply to Beans specifically it does relate to what the previous person said. I call it a Spin-off topic; When somone posts something that is AT LEAST relavent to another post it's OKAY.
But that's just what I think.

Perhaps I'm just a torn face disaster or perhaps it's because I'm ahead of my years, but one thing I cannot stand is lazy posts with no opinion and awful grammar.
Example: "OMG!!...Teh weather is real bad. sup wit dat?!11"
I see things like this all the time (not here) and it gets really annoying. I like reading civilised reviews of certain subjects and if I don't get that, I go elsewhere. It's one thing to post, but it's even more important to know what to post before you do so. Also, when you're on the Internet you actually have time to think before you say something.
Before you make a new topic, you have to think to yourself - "Will this be a worthy topic or a '2 replies then closed' thread?"

Funny thing you say that Grace, cause aren't you the one that made the "Do you veiw the second page" thread and all you said was "I don't"

That was more like a random question than a standard thread and maybe it shouldn't have been posted. See, I'm man enough to admit my mistakes though.

That's the thing, most of us are admiting we spam, yet we are asking the mods to do something about it when really we are the ones that can and should do something about it.

Trigani-Maru-Suke
17-09-2005, 19:58
Are you talking to me or Akiko? I'm talking about the fact that we are asking the mods to make a no post count place when really we could just stop making as much off-topic posts and we wouldn't need one.
I gather he is talking about me, and im on about you running on acting how your the perfect member to never spam and all that (not saying you said this, but its the way you've been acting/preaching and comaplaining about the spam) and then you go along and a make a complete utterly useless thread.

I made that topic before I made the post you're talking about. Anyway, I've tried to offer some friendly and knowlegable advice but now I feel daft for even bothering, so have a nice day and try not to contribute to the spam.

That in hell and heaven does that have to do with anything we are talking about?
I find it very amusing that Grace proved Akiko's point in the posts that was ment to reply to her point.
