View Full Version : Sequels, Sequels part II, and Return of Sequels

Sequels blow and there's a reason why they suck. Once, a great movie or game comes along. Nobody knows if it will be successful. Then it gets released and a million copies are sold. The thing becomes an instant favourite among consumers everywhere and goes down in history as being one of the greatest films or games ever made, like Alien or something. A few years go by and the producers (or some new faces) decide that a sequel should be in order. What we get is either a likeable effort (Aliens is great) but sometimes we get a disappointing conclusion that isn't as hot as its predecessor.
Let's see; Alien, Friday the 13th, Jaws, Tremors, Scream, Carrie, The Terminator, Psycho, Halloween, Creepshow and Candyman all fall victim to awful sequels. I mean, you cannot even tell what you're watching half the time and your concentration decreases. I usually have to watch the movies again to grasp the moral of the particular film I just saw.
Now I'm going to talk about music. I love music. Who doesn't? Kings or slaves could enjoy it many years ago. Cultures created their own music and music has changed quite dramatically during the past 100 years. Now we're in 2005 and I often ask myself what happened to great music? It's gone. Instead of true talent, we get these shitty manufactured pieces of shit that can barely sing a lick. They want to make a lot of cash through other people's legacy. They don't write their own songs and sometimes they don't sing at all (Blackbox). Not only that, but the music is played by these boring session musicians.
I despise modern music and I'd rather listen to George Michael than listen to all the sad crap they have on the radio these days. I hate updates of old songs as well. I mean, some people have disrespected Queen, Cher and Gloria Estefan by doing retarded cover versions or remixes of their biggest hits. Great entertainment should be remembered as great entertainment. That's like destroying nice flowers and planting new ones there just for the sake of it. I really cannot express this enough. Updates are not required, nor are they decent and I hate it when they ruin a classic franchise.

Listen to non-mainstream, and see the light. ;)
I can introduce you to some bands that never come on the radio, and are definitely EVERYTHING but crap. Knock on my door on Yahoo messenger sometime. :D
Anyhow, as regards to sequels. I tend to agree with you with a lot of what you said, sequels tend not be half as good as the originals...look at FFX and FFX-2 for example. No comparison. The story in FFX-2 was weak, the characters were completely out of character when compared to the original (Charlie's Angels style at that), and...yeah. The endings were kinda meh as well.

Dear Lord. Don't even get me started on that piece of poop >_>
Anyway, shifting it to entertainment forums seeing as it appears to fit better then then in here.

Sometimes covers can be a great thing, such as Muse's cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." THAT is a classic piece of prog rock trickery. I like it when a song is covered, but changed to the band's style, such as Cash covering Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" - both songs are amazing, and I love them both.
Now I'm not a great fan of Queen, but yes, their songs are always ruined when other people cover them.
And yes, some of the music that's around nowadays is pure turd, but I can see my tastes differ from yours entirely, considering I hate George Michael and would rather prod him with shit on a stick than listen to him. The Indie Rock movement has gone a bit stale, yes, but back when it was fresh and new, it was amazing, Franz Ferdinand were - and still are - the best at the genre, they created it, and they still lead it. There are other bands that also stand out against the rest of the muddy pool that is indie rock, such as The Killers, Bloc Party, Death From Above 1979, Muse, The Arcade Fire, even Radiohead.
But then on the other side of the scale, we have the Hip Hop stuff and whatever, which I don't care for, its all studio magic to make it sound decent, dubbed when on stage... and all about glamour and looks.
And the radio is shit for music anyways, there's no diversity, there's nothing new, always the artists that have made a name for themselves. So stop listening to that, and get out there and dig around for unheard stuff... like... JJ72. I think James and myself are the only people who have heard of them in the entire of my college... sure my friends have heard of them, but I mean... Me and James are those that LOVE them... heh.
But as I always say, it boils down to personal tastes really doesn't it? So I say lets all enjoy what we like and you don't have to endure what other people like, if you don't like it - turn it off. Simple as.
Didn't you already make a thread blasting todays music?
and for your information I LOVE the Sugababes <3
Yeah like stop listening to the radio (unless like me your listening to that certain radio station because of the segments and funny things they have on it. Also like this one station I listen to plays some old rock and some new rock (which sucks cause alot of the "newer" rock around now blows), but the old stuff is good <3) or mainstream music, xD. There still are some good bands out there and are from around this time, btw George Michael sucks =P Too... not-my-style for me to like. Well some remakes of songs are good, but alot just turn out crap, like when people play the song but in their own style, but not COMPLETELY change it.
Hip-Hop/R'n'B/Rap has just went down the train now and sh*t, like all the lyrics (mainly going for rap on THIS one) are just about being a pimp, sex and stuff like that. Down I guess some R'n'B and Hip-Hop are ALRIGHT, though I still wouldn't listen to it. But that's because i'm not big fans of those genres, but again some are alright, some just suck. The only rapper I like from now is Scribe, cause his lyrics actually have some meaning to it, like not all his songs I guess, but most are about his life and stuff. And dude what's Blackbox? Don't you mean beatbox? Where they use their mouth to generate all these different kinds of sounds... or maybe there is some other thing I don't know about called Blackbox, xD.

I'll add you.

Blackbox had a huge hit with "Ride On Time." The lady in the video just dances away while somebody else sings.

Well no shit.

The radio channel I like is all I'll ever need, but the idiots at my work keep changing the station or the CD I'm listening to out of spite. Like when I go to blow my nose, Andrew takes the CD out and puts his trash on instead. He keeps saying he's going to do wrestling moves on me as well.
And yes, some of the music that's around nowadays is pure turd, but I can see my tastes differ from yours entirely, considering I hate George Michael and would rather prod him with shit on a stick than listen to him.
Dude, George Michael wrote "Careless Whisper" which I consider to be one of the greatest ballads ever penned.

You're a torn face disaster Grace. That you are. I just had to quote myself too.
